Hawai‘i Holds Off UC Davis On Senior Night, 3-1

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (18-8, 14-2 Big West) defeated UC Davis (16-12, 8-8 Big West) in four sets, 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. It was Senior Night for seven Rainbow Wahine—fourth-year junior Natasha Burns, Reyn "Tita" Akiu, Angel Gaskin, Sarah Liva, Faith Ma'afala, Casey Castillo and McKenna Granato.
 
Granato led Hawai'i in her final game on the Teraflex with a match-high 17 kills. She hit an efficient .429 with just two errors on 35 attempts. She finished two digs shy of a double-double but it marked her 18th double-digit kill match this season. She also had a pair of service aces and two blocks with eight digs. She finished her career with 1,044 total kills which ranks her at No. 19 all-time in Rainbow Wahine history. For her career she finished with 739 digs, 108 aces, and 102 total blocks.
 
Fellow senior Casey Castillo added 12 kills and added a block and a dig. It was her second-straight double-digit kill match of the weekend and her ninth of the season. She finished her career with 457 kills, 113 blocks, 165 digs and 16 aces.
 
Junior setter/opposite Norene Iosia flirted with recording yet another triple-double, but finished a kill short. She finished by posting her 15th double-double of the season with 20 assists and 13 digs to go with nine kills. In the match, she tied her career-high with five blocks.

Fourth-year junior Natasha Burns tied her career high putting up six blocks in her final match at Hawai'i. She also added six kills with three digs and an assists.
 
Senior Tita Akiu recorded a team-high 18 digs and finished the season with her 25th double-digit dig match of the year. For the season, the transfer from Texas Tech tallied 441 total digs and averaged 4.4 digs per set.
 
Senior Faith Ma'afala posted her ninth double-double of the season with a team-high 22 assists and 12 digs. She also had a kill and a service ace. Her serving runs allowed the 'Bows to rally from behind in both the first and second sets.   
 
A total of four Rainbow Wahine notche double-digits in digs with Akiu (18), Iosia (13), Ma'afala (12), and defensive specialist Rika Okino tallied 10 digs. It marked her fourth double-digit dig match of the year.
 
In the first set, the Aggies jumped out to 14-6 lead on a 7-to-0 run with Brianna Karsseboom serving. Hawai'i responded. The 'Bows rallied and out-scored UC Davies to finish the frame on a 19-to-5 run  to take Set 1, 25-19. The turning point came with Ma'afala serving tough for five-straight points. She started her serving run with UH trailing 13-16 and ended it with an 18-16 lead.
 
The second set also saw UC Davis take a slim early lead. The Aggies last led at 8-7. UH tied it at 8-8 on a UCD serving error and then Ma'afala started serving and UH went on a 5-to-0 run to bolt out to a 13-8 lead from which UCD could not recover from as UH led the rest of the way to take the second set, 25-17.
 
The two teams kept things close in a third set that saw 13 ties, the last coming at 22-22. But the Aggies won three of the last four points to take the frame, 25-23. UH led the match at 2-1.
 
The fourth set was close early on, but the 'Bows started to pull away getting two lengthy service runs off the serve of Okino. She had a four-point run that left UH with a 10-6 lead and later another three-point run that gave UH a 23-13 lead. UH cruised to win the fourth set, 25-14.

UC Davis' Karsseboom led the Aggies with 16 kills while Malia Bolko recorded a match-high 22 digs. Lauren Jackson led UCD with four blocks. 
 
For just the third time this season and first time since the Cal Poly win, UH recorded double-digit blocks as a team, out-blocking the Aggies 12.0-to-5.-. UH out-hit UC Davis 56-to-51 in kills and had a .275-to-149 in hitting percentage. UH also had the edge in digs, 69-to-62.
