HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened its 2018 season on Friday against No. 21 Florida State. Although the Seminoles defeated the young Rainbow Warriors, 7-0, the 'Bows battled throughout the day but came up short. Making their collegiate regular season debuts for Hawai'i were Blaz Seric,
Lucas Labrunie, Aleksa Lazarevic,
Tristan Martins, and Chia-Hua Lu.
The match started with doubles play. On the No. 1 court, Florida State's No. 8-ranked pair of Jose Gracia and Lucas Poullain held off Hawai'i's duo of
Fabian Woehrl and
Felix Albert by just a break, 6-4. At No. 2, FSU's Aziz Dougaz and Guy Iradukunda doubled up on UH's Blaz Seric and
Lucas Labrunie, 6-3. Hawai'i's
Eric Kenneth and Aleksa Lasarevic fell on the No. 3 court to the Seminoles' Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst, 6-3.
In singles, No. 22, FSU's Iradukunda held off UH's Seric in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Hawai'i's Albert took Florida State's Dougaz to three sets, but FSU took the match, 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3. Hawai'i's Lazarevic also went the distance against Gracia, but fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. UH's Martins just missed on forcing his match to three sets, falling to Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
The two squads will square off against each other again on Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
