No. 6 Water Polo Closes Rainbow Invite on Commanding Victory Over No. 24 Marist

HONOLULU – The No. 6 University of Hawai'i water polo team (2-1) closed out the 2018 Rainbow Invite in style on Sunday, delivering a crushing defeat to 24th-ranked Marist at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. In total, Hawai'i's performance produced seven total scorers, one career high, three hat tricks and 16 steals.

Sophomore Maartje Keuning made the Rainbow Wahine attack known to the Red Foxes early and often, reaching the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the match, and scoring twice more for her first hat trick of the season in the first 5:04 of the match. Junior Irene Gonzalez, senior Chloe Barr and junior Femke Aan also netted a combined five goals to put UH ahead 8-3 at end of the opening stanza.

The Rainbow Wahine kept pouring it on thick in the second, as Aan reached her first hat trick of the year at 6:53, adding two additional goals and tag-teaming the Red Foxes with Gonzalez, Barr, Keuning and freshman Ann Inoue to lead Hawai'i to a 15-3 advantage at the half.

Although the third period was much quieter for the Rainbow Wahine, Aan reached a new career high with her sixth goal at 6:39, and some new faces saw serious playing time against a top-25 foe; Carmen Baringo and Magdalena Mathis both notched third-quarter scores, while Inoue's scoring shot in the second was a career-first.

Gonzalez' two scores in the final frame pushed her to the third UH hat trick and her second of the early season, accounting for all of UH's fourth-quarter scoring as the Rainbow Wahine coasted to a 20-7 victory.

The Rainbow Wahine were also able to record some pool time for the goalkeepers, using four in the cage with Molly DiLalla and Kayla Change each recording saves. Senior starter Ymane Hage picked up four saves and a steal in the win.
