DAVIS, Calif. – The Hawai'i soccer team fired a season-high 11 shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net, falling 1-0 at UC Davis in the Big West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday.
UC Davis took the lead in the 36th minute when Mckenna Moriarty got on the end of Mandy McKeegan's corner kick and beat UH goalkeeper
Alexis Mata.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Hawai'i offense stayed on the attack for the majority of the second half. The Rainbow Wahine managed 13 shots, nine shots on goal, and eight corner kicks in the second half, but came up empty on the scoreboard.
The Aggies meanwhile, managed just three shots and one on goal in the second half, but it didn't matter, as Alexis Smith stopped all 11 Hawai'i shots on goal to preserve the 1-0 Aggie victory.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto and
Leialoha Medeiros each had four shots, including two on goal, for the Rainbow Wahine, while
Sonest Furtado had three, all on frame. UH led the contest in shots (19-7), shots on goal (11-3) and corner kicks (9-6).
The loss snaps Hawai'i's three-game winning streak, and drops the 'Bows to 5-5 on the season, and 0-1 in Big West play. UC Davis moves to 2-9 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. UC Davis' Laura Nichol and Oreoluwa Aberibigbe each picked up yellow cards in the game's final seven minutes.
Hawai'i will wrap up a string of seven consecutive road games when it visits Long Beach State on Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. HT. The 49ers have been off since a Sept. 17 win at St. Johns.
