SKILLMAN, N.J.—Two University of Hawai'i women's tennis players will compete in the 2017 Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. for the 34th year.
Reigning Big West Player and Freshman of the Year,
Petra Melounova, will start the tournament in Qualifying Singles. She is just the second Rainbow Wahine history under head coach
Jun Hernandez to start as a qualifier, joining Sophie Kobuch who did so in September of 2008. Melounova, who posted a 14-2 overall record last year and became the first Rainbow Wahine to ever win an NCAA tournament match last year, enters this preseason ranked No. 31 in the ITA. Melounova, who enters the qualifying rounds as the No. 6 seed, opens on Tuesday, Oct. 3 against California's Olivia Hauger. If she wins her opening match, she will face the winner of the Eva Marie Voracek (Loyola Marymount) and Claudia Herrera Garcia (Nevada) match. Voracek advanced from last week's pre-qualifying rounds.
In doubles, Melounova and partner
Roxanne Resma come into the season ranked No. 51 in the ITA. The dynamic duo will begin play in the qualifier round. The qualifying matches begin on Oct. 3 and the main draw runs from Oct. 5-8. The UH pair will take on Virginia's Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley.b Last year, Melounova and Resma played at No. 1 for the 'Bows and earned all-Big West first team honors after finishing with a 11-3 dual match record and a perfect 5-0 mark in conference. The pair finished the season ranked at No. 67.
