WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i soccer team couldn't find the late-game heroics that lifted the 'Bows to two overtime wins last week, falling 1-0 to Pacific on Thursday night in the opening game of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic.
The Tigers got on the board in the 10
th minute when Samia Adam connected a pass to Bryndis Thorolfsdottir in the box, who then beat UH goalkeeper
Alexis Mata for the early lead.
Despite constant offensive chances for the Rainbow Wahine, the Tiger defense never broke. UH held a 17-9 advantage in shots, including 8-5 in shots on goal, but Tiger goalkeeper Regan Heslop came up with eight saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) erased one-goal deficits in each of their first two games of the season.
Sonest Furtado led Hawai'i with five shots, including four on goal, while
Raisa Strom-Okimoto and
Kellsie Gleason each had four shots for UH. Mata made four saves.
Pacific (1-1-1) was whistled for 20 fouls and handed three yellow cards in the game, and the Tigers also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Katelyn Chandler led Pacific with two shots, both on-goal.
