SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (27-19, 6-9 Big West) embarks on its final regular season roadtrip of the season to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to take on Cal Poly (31-16, 7-8 Big West). The two teams will square off in a single game on Friday, May 5 at 3:00 pm HT followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 beginning at 11:00 a.m. HT. All games will be plated at the Mustangs' Bob Janssen Field.
Hawai'i is coming off a 2-1 series win over UC Santa Barbara this past week. The 'Bows won the first two games behind the pitching of
Brittany Hitchcock and the hitting of
Callee Heen. Hitchcock fired a pair of complete games to go 2-0 and appeared in all three games against the Gauchos. She scattered 16 hits and gave up five runs in 15.0 innings of work. Hitchcock issued just two walks to 14 strikeouts and had a 1.87 ERA for the series. Overall, Hitchcock continues to lead UH overall with a 1.86 ERA and an 18-9 record with 24 complete games in 27 starts. She has eight shutouts this season with 24 walks and 154 strikeouts in 176.2 innings pitched.
Heen, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, earned her first weekly award after launching three consecutive two-run home runs against UCSB over the first two games. The rookie catcher/designated player was then walked four times—twice intentionally. She led UH in the series with a .500 batting average (3-for-6) with a 2.000 slugging percentage and .700 on-base percentage. Overall this season, Heen is hitting .293 (36-for-123) and is second in the league with nine home runs. She has five doubles, a triple 26 RBI and 19 runs scored. She leads UH with 15 walks.
Also having a breakout series was fellow freshman
Chardonnay Pantastico. The rightfielder went 3-for-3 in the opener and hit .444 for the series with three runs scored and an RBI. In Big West games, she is second on the team hitting .360 (9-for-25) with five runs scored and a home run.
Overall, sophomores
Nicole Lopez and
Sarah Muzik continue to lead the Rainbow Wahine on offense. Lopez leads the Big West with12 home runs and she is tops on the team with 24 runs scored, 11 doubles and a .662 slugging percentage. She is tied for the team lead with 49 hits with Muzik and is second on the squad with 30 RBI. Muzik is right on Lopez's heels with a .336 batting average with five doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and she leads UH with seven stolen bases.
