Women's Tennis Continues California Roadtrip At Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (9-5, 4-0 Big West) remains on the road in California to play a pair of Big West Conference matches at Cal Poly (1-10, 0-2 BWC) on Tuesday, March 28 followed by UC Santa Barbara (7-8, 1-0 BWC) on Thursday, March 30.

The Rainbow Wahine began this California roadtrip with a match against No. 5 Stanford. Although the 'Bows fell to the Cardinal, 4-0, UH was battling hard and the singles matches ended with all three remaining matches entering or in the middle of the third set.

Three Rainbow Wahine have already hit double-digit wins in singles—Petra Melounova, Marina Hruba and Cindy Nguyen all have 10 singles wins. Melounova has won eight of her last 10 matches with the other two going unfinished. In her last match at Stanford, Melounova played on the No. 1 court against No. 51 Caroline Doyle and was surging in the third set when her match ended unfinished 3-6, 6-3, 3-1. Melounova leads UH with a 10-2 overall record and is 8-1 in dual matches.

After a slow start to the season in which she began with a 1-4 record, Hruba has come on strong, winning nine-straight singles matches before her last match at Stanford went unfinished against No. 53 Caroline Lampl.  Overall, Hruba is now 10-4 with a 10-2 dual match record primarily playing at No. 3.

Nguyen comes into this week with a 10-7 overall record. After winning eight of nine matches earlier in the season, she is now looking to bounce back to snap a four-match losing streak. She has played 11 matches at No. 1 and three on the No. 2 court.

In doubles, UH's duo of Nguyen and Klara Pribylova lead the 'Bows with a 9-4 record. They are 5-3 at No. 2 and 3-1 on the No. 1 court. Hawai'i's regular No. 1 doubles team of Melounova and Roxanne Resma have posted a 6-3 record overall and 5-2 in dual matches all at No. 1.

Cal Poly currently is 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the Big West. The Mustangs are led in singles by Susanne Boyden who has a team-best 7-2 record, going 3-0 on the No. 2 court and 4-2 when playing at No. 1. Both Serina Saltzen and Molly Reed come into the week with three singles wins apiece.

UC Santa Barbara comes into this week with a 7-8 overall record and a 1-0 Big West mark.
