Box Score HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team opened its last homestand of the season by sweeping CSUN on Friday night, 25-19, 25-21, 25-12.
Emily Maglio led the Rainbow Wahine with 13 kills and five blocks on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i improved to to 17-7 overall and 11-2 in the Big West while CSUN falls to 10-14 overall and 4-8 in conference.
Maglio recorded her 19
th double-digit kill match of the season and for the 10
th time this year she hit above the .400 mark with a hitting percentage of .478 with just two errors in 23 attacks.
UH's middle attack accounted between Maglio,
Natasha Burns and
Skyler Williams accounted for 20 of UH's 35 total kills. Burns notched six kills and a block while Williams had one kill coming in relief in the third set.
Savanah Kahakai recorded 11 digs for her 20
th double-double dig match of the season. She now has had 10 or more digs in the last 14 straight matches. She is now just 18 digs shy of tying former UH great Reydan "Tita" Ahuna who is at No. 3 all-time in UH history with 1,384 career digs. Kahakai is at 1,366.
UH's leading hitter
McKenna Granato had just five kills on the night, but she posted a match-high 15 digs, a block and two aces to fill her stat line.
It was a true team-win as thirteen UH players made it on the Teraflex and made contributions, including
Kalei Greeley who had two digs and her first service ace of the season.
McKenna Ross posted a kill, a dig and two blocks—including her second solo block of her career. And
Faith Ma'afala recorded three assists with an ace.
In the first set, both teams traded points early before UH jumped out to a six point lead at 12-6. The Matadors, however, would come storming back on an 8-to-1 run to overtake the 'Bows with their first lead of the frame at 14-13. The 'Bows would end the first set on a 6-to-2 run, to capture it, 25-19.
The two teams began the second set tying at every point until it was 7-7. CSUN then took a 10-7 lead, but UH then went on a 7-0 run with Kahakai behind the service line to take a 14-10 lead. Hawai'i would lead by as many as five points last at 22-17. But CSUN would close to within two points at 22-20. Hawai'i would closeout the set winning three of the last four points to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win in Set 2.
After trading points early on, UH erupted for a 10-to-2 run highlighted by back to back aces by
McKenna Granato during a five-point service run that pushed UH's lead to 14-6 and then pulled away in the end by 13 points at 25-12 for the match.
CSUN's Aeryn Owens led the Matadors with 11 kills but UH was able to hold their leading hitter who usually averages .253 to just .073 hitting percentage. Katie Sato tied Granato with a match-high 15 digs while Rachel Dias had a hand in five blocks.
Saturday is Senior Night and a WHITEOUT as the Rainbow Wahine will honor six, four-year letterwinners—
