BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The UH swimming and diving teams got the 2017-18 season started in excellent fashion on Saturday at Cal State Bakersfield. The Rainbow Warriors took first place in 13 out of 16 events in a dual meet against CSU Bakersfield, while the Rainbow Wahine took first in 11 out of 16 events in a double-dual against CSU Bakersfield and Idaho.
Phoebe Hines won both the women's 200 free and 500 free with 2017-18 MPSF-best times of 1:51.81 and 4:53.58, respectively.
Jane Ip added an MPSF-best 2:17.01 in the 200 breast, while the Rainbow Wahine 400 medley relay of
Franziska Weidner, Ip,
Kasey Schmidt and
Taylor Thorsen won in 3:47.51, another MPSF top time this season.
By day's end, the Rainbow Wahine also collected medalist honors in the 50 free (Thorsen, 24.24), 100 free (
Alexandria Swanson, 53.05), 1000 free (
Kira Webster, 10:26.31); 100 back (
Anna Kotonen, 58.23), 200 back (Weidner, 2:01.90), 100 breast (
Kionna Clayton, 1:04.26), 3-meter diving (
Madison Sthamann, 311.95), and 400 medley relay (3:47.51).
"The women were rock stars, they did great," UH coach
Dan Schemmel said. "Franzi was on-fire. Phoebe was awesome, she won the 200 and the 500, and her 200 was almost as fast as her swim in the conference meet last year. Top to bottom the women swam really well."
Senior diver
Mariah Renteria won the 1-meter with a score of 276.65. Each of the five UH divers -- Renteria, Sthamann,
Ivy Houser,
Jami Stone, and Cooperman – picked up an NCAA Zone E qualifying score in at least one event on Saturday.
The Rainbow Warriors were just as dominant as the Wahine, finishing the MPSF-best times in the 1000 free (
Jonas Gutzat, 9:48.43), 100 breast (
Olli Kokko, 55.57), 200 fly (
Metin Aydin, 1:51.12), 200 free relay (1:22.56) and 400 medley relay (3:22.01).
Reed Wynn notched victories in the 50 free and 100 free with times of 22.11 and 46.10, respectively. He was one of five Rainbow Warriors to take medalist honors in multiple events, joining
Kane Follows (100 back, 200 back), Kokko (100 breast, 200 breast), Aydin (100 fly, 200 fly) and
Lucas Cooperman (1-meter diving, 3-meter diving).
"The men swam well, but just made some really silly mistakes," Schemmel added. "Metin was on fire and
Reed Wynn had a really good day. Olli had a good debut today.
Drew Holloway had his first win today, right when we needed him to win.
Kane Follows won his two events and came up big time. Those were two events that Metin usually swims, but we didn't have to put Metin in those events because we knew Kane could win."
UH returns to action on Sunday as the men's and women's swimming teams visit MPSF-rival UC Santa Barbara while the divers visit UCLA.
