LAHAINA, Maui—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team battled against players from Kansas and Washington State on the second day of the UH Spring Invitational held at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch in Lahaina, Maui on Friday.
 
In doubles, UH's Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma were the only Rainbow Wahine duo to record a victory. Melounova and Resma held off Washington State's Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova by a break to win, 6-4. Two other Hawai'i pairs fell by a break—Cindy Nguyen and Marina Hruba were edged out by Kansas' Anastasia Rychagova and Janet Koch, 6-4 while Klara Pribylova and Saga Shermis fell to the Jayhawks' Maria Toran Ribes and Tatiana Nikolaeva, 6-4.
 
Nguyen notched her second singles victory in as many days with a three-set thriller over Kansas' Koch, 7-6 (8), 2-6, 6-3. Resma won her match in straight sets over Washington State's Victoria Matejevic, 6-2, 6-2. Both Hruba and Pribylova battled in three set matches in a losing effort. Hruba won her first set but lost the second set by a break. In the third set, Kansas' Ribes held off Hruba to secure the win in a tight tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Pribylova dropped her first set before evening the match by capturing the second frame. Kansas' Nikolaeva then pulled away in the third for the victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
 
In a match between two ranked players, the Jayhawks' No. 65 Anastasia Rychagova downed UH's No. 119 Melounova in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
 
The third and final day of the tournament will be played tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 7 in Lahaina, Maui.
