Baseball Alumnus Wright Becomes First UH MLB All-Star

HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i and current Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright earned an invitation to the 2016 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, marking the first time a UH player has appeared on the All-Star roster in program history. The 87th All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12 at 5:00 p.m. PT (2:00 p.m. HT) at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. The game will air live on FOX.

Wright was selected by American League All-Star manager Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals. The game starters and relievers have not been determined as of this time.

"We couldn't be happier for Steven," Hawai'i baseball coach Mike Trapasso said. "It's well deserved and gives him a tremendous testimony to the value of hard work and perseverance. From today on Steven's name will be followed by the word All-Star. Go Bows!"

Wright tops the Red Sox starters with 2.42 ERA through 16 starts, tallying a 9-5 record on the year; the second-highest win total on the team. Through a team second-most 108.0 innings, he's struck out 87 and held the opposition to just .217 hitting; the best average among Boston starters. He ties for the MLB lead in complete games (3).

Wright and the Red Sox entered Tuesday 2.0 games back in the American League East standings and will close out the week with divisional games versus Tampa Bay heading into the All-Star break. Wright is scheduled to start Wednesday for Boston against Texas.

Amidst a true breakout season, the acclaimed knuckleballer holds the fifth-best ERA among American League starters, tying for the seventh-most innings pitched among the league's pitchers.

Wright appeared as a right-handed pitcher for the Rainbow Warriors for three seasons (2004-06), earning a record of 18-6 through 24 starts across 55 appearances. He registered an ERA of 3.12 with 228 strikeouts. He was drafted in the second round of the 2006 MLB Draft with the 56th overall pick by the Cleveland Indians.
