St.-Cesaire, Quebec, Canada senior
Alex Porlier Langlois highlighted the day's competition for the Rainbow Wahine, extending her mark beyond last season's Preliminary by .29m in the shot put. On Saturday, Porlier Langlois tossed a distance of 53-01.00 (16.18m) to finish 15th in the overall standings. She came up just 14 inches shy of qualification for the NCAA Championships, despite throwing further than in 2015 when she finished ninth.
Kapolei, O'ahu senior
Charlinda Ioane came in 42nd with a mark of 42-2.0 (12.85m) in her final career performance and first appearance at the NCAA Preliminary Round.
Results were also finalized for the pair with the completion of the final flight of the discus on Saturday, after weather delays postponed the event on Friday. Ioane ranked 28th in the final standings with a toss of 160-4 (48.89m). Porlier Langlois followed with a 159-9 (48.69m) throw for 30th place.
Over the weekend, Hawai'i was one of 120 Division I programs that competed at the West Preliminary Round meet.
"I am extremely pleased with how well our team competed, especially amidst the highly unusual weather conditions, the ever-changing competition schedule and the five-hour time zone difference," head track coach
Carmyn James said.
"Of the five Rainbow Wahine, Alex was the only one who had ever competed at this level before. Her throw of 16.18m in the shot put was a foot further than what she threw last year and yet it placed her 15th compared to last year's ninth place finish. In addition, Alex was the best Big West Conference competitor."
"In the discus, Charlinda was not only our team's top thrower but also the best from the Big West. She placed 28th with a fling of 48.89m on her third throw following two fouls and just before the next crack of lightning. Her performance was an impressive demonstration of staying calm and cool while under pressure!"
"In the javelin, Karen [Bulger] was our top thrower. Her toss of 44.78m was just 2m off her seasonal best but what was extremely impressive was the fact that she placed 33rd in the competition after ranking 43rd going into it. Karen demonstrated a great ability of competitiveness when it came to head-to-head competition on the same runway under the same conditions."
"Fortunately for Tiziana [Ruiz Dominguez], the pole vault competition was moved indoors for safety reasons. Although she didn't have to deal with the weather conditions, she did have to battle with a strong field of competitors. In her event, Tiziana was one of 22 vaulters who cleared 4.12m (13-6.25). Had she cleared the bar on her first attempt, she would have qualified for the NCAA Finals, but her third attempt clearance tied her for 18th. The good news is, like Alex in the shot put and Char in the discus, Tiziana was the best from the Big West and she beat all but one of the PAC-12 vaulters. In addition, because the pole vault was moved from outside, Tiziana broke her own UH indoor school record," James concluded.
Despite strong finishes at the Preliminary, none of the Rainbow Wahine were able to advance to the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore., bringing the 2016 University of Hawai'i track and field season to a close.
