Ruiz Dominguez Leads UH On Second Day At NCAA Preliminary Round

NCAA Preliminary Second Day Results

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Severely delayed by inclement weather at University of Kansas' Rock Chalk Park, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine track and field squad has completed two events, with another suspended mid-competition, following the second day of action at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Round.

To call the severe weather delays at the Preliminary Round numerous would be an understatement. The opening day's second field event, the javelin, was postponed mid-competition on Thursday, finishing up this morning to finalize the standings. Olympia, Wash. redshirt freshman Karen Bulger led the Rainbow Wahine in the event, throwing 146-11 (44.78m) to end her first-ever NCAA event in 33rd. Following her, Wai'anae, O'ahu sophomore Felicianna Vazquez came in 48th at 117-11 (35.95m).

Battling through severe thunderstorms and area tornadic activity, the meet again met delays on the second day of competition. Rainbow Wahine seniors Charlinda Ioane (Kapolei, O'ahu) and Alex Porlier Langlois (St.-Cesaire, Canada) began the discus on Friday morning, but the event stalled after two flights and will conclude on Saturday morning. In the meantime, both UH student-athletes were able to complete their second-flight throws, Ioane, who tossed 160-4 (48.89m). Porlier Langlois threw a distance of 159-9 (48.69m). Their final placement will be determined when the even resumes on Saturday.

Hawai'i's top performer of the day was Tiziana Ruiz Dominguez, who narrowly missed qualification in the pole vault, despite again hitting her career high mark of 13-6.25 (4.12m). The Veracruz, Mexico senior came in tied for 18th, hitting the same mark as seventh place, but a pair of misses bumped her down the standings.

Due to the weather circumstances, the event was moved indoors at Kansas' Anschutz Pavilion, giving Ruiz Dominguez an opportunity to secure another new indoor record in her final career competition.

Also on Saturday's schedule, both Porlier Langlois and Ioane will compete in the shot put with a 12:30 p.m. CT (7:30 a.m. HT) start.
