Complete ResultsLONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine concluded competition on Saturday at the Big West Track and Field Championships at Jack Rose Track Stadium in Long Beach, Calif., finishing eighth overall on the final day of conference events.
"Although I am surprised and disappointed with our team's overall place, I am very impressed with the number of individual success stories and outstanding accomplishments," head coach
Carmyn James commented. "Compared to last year, we scored more points, achieved more personal bests and UH all-time top-10 performances. In addition, we won more medals and qualified a greater number of team members to the NCAA Championships!"
After racking up a combined 14 points on Friday, St.-Cesaire, Canada senior
Alex Porlier Langlois and Kapolei, O'ahu senior
Charlinda Ioane combined again to put UH back on the scoreboard. Porlier Langlois hit a career-best mark to set a new school record in the shot put at 54-2.75 (16.53m) to come in second, moving up to 17th in the West Region and 26th nationally in the event. Ioane also logged a seventh-place mark of 46-11.00 (14.30m) in the event to add to the scoring total. Porlier Langlois also hit a career mark in the hammer throw to finish 10th on a distance of 173-6 (52.88m).
Advancing to the final on Friday with an eighth-place preliminary finish, Perth, Australia senior
Louise Mulvey chipped a second off her 800m time to come in fifth with a time of 2:12.95 on Saturday.
Also getting a boost over her preliminary performance, Chino Hills, Calif. senior
Robyn Brown sliced 1.14 seconds from her 400m hurdles time to move from ninth in the prelim up to a sixth-place final performance in 1:01.20., just .12 seconds off her career mark.
Competing in only her second triple jump since incurring an injury in January, Moncks Corner, S.C. graduate student
LeAnna Morrison added 8.27 inches to her career best to finish sixth with a leap of 12.01m. With her career high, Morrison moves up to fifth on the UH all-time performance list.
Also competing on Saturday,
Sha'tres Ah Nee logged a 10th-place mark of 5-3.25 (1.61m) in the high jump,
Alli Cross was 10th in the 5,000m at 18:06.40 and
Camille Campos came in 12th in the 1,500m at 4:51.54.
Overall, the Rainbow Wahine recorded a total of 56 points to finish eighth in the conference standings, just six points behind Cal State Fullerton. UC Davis topped the women's field with a scoring total of 135.5 points.
With the main competition season completed, the Rainbow Wahine will await the final Regional event standings as teams complete their conference championships this week and select last chance meets next week. The top 48 athletes in the region in their respective events will move on to the NCAA Preliminary Championships, slated for May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan. At the conclusion of the Big West meet, UH was in line for seven qualifications to the NCAA Preliminary.
While being on the road during the annual UH Spring Commencement ceremonies, the team did its own private ceremony with the seven seniors on the squad.
