LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine track and field team jumped out to a hot start on the first day of action at the Big West Track and Field Championships, moving into tie for third place Friday at Jack Rose Track Stadium in Long Beach, Calif.
UH got on the scoreboard early with a quartet of top-five finishes in throws and five total from the field events.
In the discus throw, St.-Cesaire, Canada senior
Alex Porlier Langlois paced the event for UH with a career-best 172-9 (52.65m) for second place, edging out Kapolei, O'ahu classmate
Charlinda Ioane, who delivered a huge career-best of 172-0 (52.42m), improving her personal mark by 2.2m for third place.
Meanwhile, in the javelin, Olympia, Wash. redshirt freshman
Karen Bulger showed up on the conference stage, adding 1.87m to her personal best, landing a 153-2 (46.68m) throw for second place. Fellow underclassman, Cottage Grove, Ore. sophomore
Destiny Dawson went 3.55m beyond her career best for fourth place at 146-8 (44.70m).
Veracruz, Mexico senior Tiziana Ruiz-Dominguez added a fifth field event scorer for UH with a second-place mark of 13-3.75 (4.06m) in the pole vault.
On the track, a pair of runners earned their spot in Saturday's final, as Perth, Australia senior
Louise Mulvey came in eighth in the 800m preliminaries with a time of 2:13.97. Joining her in Saturday's finals, Chino Hills, Calif. senior
Robyn Brown moved on in the 400m hurdles with a 1:02.34 finish.
After the first day of competition, the Rainbow Wahine are riding in the upper tier, tied with Long Beach State for third place with 35 points. UC Davis leads the field with 62.5 first-day points, ahead of UC Santa Barbara at 40.
Saturday's action begins at Jack Rose Stadium with the women's hammer throw at 10:00 a.m. PT (7:00 a.m. HT).
