INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's tennis team fell to UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference Championship match, 4-0 on Saturday morning. The Rainbow Wahine finish their season with an overall record of 13-10, while the Gauchos improve to 18-7 and will now represent the Big West in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
 
For the 'Bows, it was the second time in school history that they advanced to the conference tournament championship match--the first time as a member of the Big West Conference. Hawai'i was looking for their second ever NCAA tournament appearance after winning the Western Athletic Conference tourney in 2012.
 
The Gauchos won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches on the No. 1 and 3 courts. UH's No. 2 duo of Roxanne Resma and Cindy Nguyen earned Hawai'i's lone win, defeating UCSB's Melissa Baker and Stephanie Yamada, 6-3.
 
In singles, UCSB won the first three matches to complete the sweep, winning on Courts 4, 5, and 6. On the No. 5 court, UH's Klara Pribylova fell to Amanda Atanasson at No. 5 by a break in both sets, 6-4, 6-4, as did Resma at No. 4, 7-5, 6-4 to Jaimee Gilbertosn. But the 'Bows were still battling in the top three matches when play was stopped. Nguyen won her first set over Lou Adler on the No.1 Court, 6-1 and was tied 6-6 in the second set when the match was called. UH's No. 2 Marina Hruba was edged out in the first set by a tie-breaker 7-6 (4) and was tied at 2-2 in the second set, while Sarah Gealer fell in the first set 2-6, but had evened things winning the second 6-4 and had just begun the third set.
 
It was UCSB's seventh tournament title overall, but the first since 1996, the final year of a six-year stretch of championships. It also marked the first time since 2010 that the same school won both the men's and women's tennis BWC titles.
