Big West Tournament Bracket SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 2016 women's water polo season is in the books and this week the No. 9 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (18-7, 3-2 BWC) look to secure a postseason berth and their second consecutive Big West title. The Big West Water Polo Championship scheduled for Friday-Sunday, April 29-May 1 at the Campus Pool at UC Santa Barbara.
Opening up the tournament on Friday, April 29 at 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT), the fourth-seeded Rainbow Wahine will face the five seed, No. 10 UC Davis Aggies (17-11, 2-3 BWC). The 'Bows look to capture their third Big West tournament title since joining the conference in 2013.
At the end of the regular season, Hawai'i finished with the same 3-2 conference record as UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. However, with a Hawai'i loss to third-seeded UCSB, and a UCSB loss to UCI, the final two weeks moved the Gauchos and Anteaters ahead of the Rainbow Wahine on the tiebreaker.
The 'Bows ended the regular season with a two-game losing streak, falling to conference rivals UCSB and the Long Beach State. The UCD Aggies ended the regular season with a three-game winning streak, including an upset over UCSB.
Hawai'i, however, holds a dominating 18-6 all-time record against the Aggies. The Rainbow Wahine most recently defeated UCD, 10-9, earlier this month in a sudden-death thriller to cap off a five-game home stand.
The winner of Friday's first-round match will advance to the semifinals to face the 2016 Big West regular season champs, Long Beach State on Saturday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT), while the losers of Friday and Saturday will compete for fifth and third place in the consolation matches on Sunday, May 1.
