2016 Big West Women's Tennis Tournament Central

INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (11-9, 5-3 Big West) enters the 2016 Big West Women's Tennis Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 5 UC Irvine in the Quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 28.  The tournament will be played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine have won their last two matches coming into this week's tournament. UH is led by freshman Marina Hruba, who enters the tourney with a 19-1 overall record and a 16-1 mark in dual matches. She is 11-0 when playing on the No. 2 court; 3-0 at No. 3; and 1-0 at No. 4. Hruba's lone loss of the season came on the No. 1 court where she posted a 1-1 record. She has won her last six straight decisions. Fellow freshman, Roxanne Resma has also played solidly this year, posting a 14-6 overall record while going 13-4 in dual matches. She has locked down the No. 5 position, posting a 10-2 record. Junior Cindy Nguyen has won her last two matches coming into this week. She has a 9-12 overall record, but is 4-2 in conference. She has played all but two matches at the No. 1 position in the lineup.

In doubles the duo of Nguyen and Resma has paced the 'Bows with a 12-7 overall record and a 10-6 dual match mark. They are 10-4 while playing on the No. 2 court.

The Anteaters finished the season strong and enter the tournament with a 6-14 overall record and a 4-4 mark in conference matches. UCI comes into the tourney on a roll, winning their last three matches—all over Big West opponents, Cal Poly, CSUN and UC Riverside. Sarah Gong has led the way for UCI in singles, posting a 12-10 overall record and a 7-8 dual match mark all on the No. 1 court. She is 4-3 against Big West opponents. Vivien Dvali has won eight matches all on the No. 2 court while Cassidy Branstine has played solidly at No. 6 with a 6-4 record there.

On March 5, the Rainbow Wahine swept the Anteaters at UC Irvine, 4-0. Hawai'i  captured the doubles point to start the match. No. 3 Paulina Petriskova and Hruba defeating Cassidy Branstine and Mazy Watrous, 6-2. But UCI evened things as they won on the No 1 court with Sarah Gong and Stephanie Hazell downing UH's Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova, 6-2. Hawai'i's No. 2 duo of Resma and Nguyen held off UCI's Andrea Duva and Vivien Dvali by a break to take the doubles point. In singles, it was the middle of UH's lineup that came through for the 'Bows. Resma almost blanked Branstine, winning 6-0, 6-1 on the No. 5 court. No. 4 Pribylova followed by knocking off Watrous, 7-5, 6-3 and Gealer clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Hazell at No. 3.
