Box Score (pdf)LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team saw its season come to an end following a four-set loss to UCLA, Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21.
The Rainbow Warriors finish their season at 16-12 while the Bruins (24-5) advance to the MPSF semifinals in Provo, Utah.
Junior outside hitter
Kupono Fey led Hawai'i with 12 kills, hitting .308 while senior outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic added 11 kills, three aces, and four digs in his final match as a Warrior. Opposite
Stijn van Tilburg posted eight kills and four digs. UH hit .204 but recorded only two team blocks compared to .362 hitting and 11.0 blocks for UCLA.
Jake Arnitz recorded a match-high 16 kills, hitting .483, and was one of four Bruins to serve two aces. UCLA finished the match with 10 aces to Hawai'i's four.
UH dropped to 0-8 all-time in MPSF opening round matches on the road.
The Warriors dropped the first two sets by identical 25-16 scores, hitting .227 and .176, respectively. UH committed a combined nine service errors without an ace while the Bruins had only two combined hitting errors while hitting .435 and .560, respectively.
Hawai'i put it together in Set 3, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. Moments later, a 5-0 run capped by a
Jennings Franciskovic ace, gave the Warriors a 13-8 lead. UH scored six answered to built its largest lead at 19-9 before holding on to the 25-22 victory.
With the score tied at 9-9 in Set 4, the Bruins scored three of four for a 13-10 lead, which included back-to-back errors by van Tilburg and Frank. UH got within 18-16 but the Bruins answered with three unanswered. The Warriors fended off two match points before Arnitz's cross-court kill ended it.
UH concluded the 2016 campaign having posted its third straight winning record and advancing to its fifth MPSF Tournament under head coach
