SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team's amazing season came to an end on Sunday night with a 73-60 loss to No. 5-seed Maryland in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Hawai'i--the 13th seed--finishes their season with an 28-6 overall record, while Maryland advances to the Sweet Sixteen after improving to 27-8 overall.

Three Rainbow Warriors posted double-digit points in the loss, led by junior forward Michael Thomas who recorded his second career double-double, pouring in 19 points and 11 rebounds—both team highs. Junior forward Stefan Jankovic added 14 points and eight rebounds while senior guard Quincy Smith closed out his collegiate career tallying 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Coming off the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win on Friday (77-66 over fourth-seeded California), Hawai'i battled hard throughout the game but a key stretch in the second half proved to be the difference. With the score tied at 41-41 at the 10:31 mark in the second half, the Terrapins pulled away using a 14-0 run, holding UH scoreless for over four minutes and Hawai'i would not be able to recover. UH would try to come back, but could not get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

In addition to Smith, seniors Roderick Bobbitt, Sai Tummala, and Dyrbe Enos played in their final career game. Bobbitt finished with six points, seven assists, and seven rebounds in 30 minutes while Tummala did not score in seven minutes. Enos did not see action in the game.

In the first half, UH jumped out to an early 13-6 lead but Maryland would score the next four points capitalizing on UH turnovers. The Terrapins overtook the 'Bows after an 8-0 run for a 14-13 lead. From that point on, both teams traded blows with five lead changes and three ties in the last 12 minutes of the half. The Rainbow Warriors had an opportunity to take a lead with the last possession of the half, but a missed shot by Thomas led to a transition foul on Jankovic that put Maryland guard Melo Trimble at the line who calmly hit both ends of the one-and-one. The Terrapins led at the half, 28-27 and UH's 27 points tied the team's season low.

Hawai'i finishd the game out-rebounding Maryland, 42-to-35, marking its first loss this season when out-rebounding an opponent. UH pulled down 16 offensive boards to just two for Maryland. Both teams struggled from long-range, with the Terrapins shooting just 1-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc, and UH hitting 4-of-19 attempts. But the Terps hit 28-of-31 free throws—including the last 17 attempts of the second half. UH tallied its lowest field-goal percentage of the season, shooting 32.9% (23-for-70) for the game and the 60 points was the lowest offensive output of the season.

Hawai'i completed a historic season in 2015-16, recording the most wins in school history (28); winning both the Big West regular season and tournament titles; playing in its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance; and winning its first NCAA tourney game. Head coach Eran Ganot was second youngest coach left in NCAA Tournament (34) next to VCU's Will Wade (33).
