Box Score (html)HONOLULU--The No. 67 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team swept Cal Poly, 4-0 to open their 2016 Big West season. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference. Cal Poly falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big West.
Hawai'i captured the doubles point to start the match. Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of Zoe Oedekerk and Dane Joubert knocked off UH's
Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova, 6-2. But Hawai'i's
Marina Hruba and
Paulina Petriskova evened things with a 6-2 win over Molly Reed and Abigail Bacharach on the No. 3 court. Hawai'i's No. 2 team of
Cindy Nguyen and
Roxanne Resma then clinched the doubles point edging out, the Mustangs' Bryn Bacarach and Ilana Oleynik in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7).
In singles, the Rainbow Wahine rolled to three-straight wins right off the bat to capture the match. Resma blanked Reed on the No. 5 court, 6-0, 6-0. Nguyen followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emily Gibbins at No. 1 and Petriskova clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over A. Bacharach in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The match was delayed for almost four hours due to inclement weather. First serve was at 1:40 pm.
The Rainbow Wahine embark on their first road of the season to California where they will play three matches. UH will start the trip with a Big West contest at UC Riverside on Feb. 14 at 11:00 am. The 'Bows will then head down the coast to take on San Diego State on Feb. 16 and then San Diego on Feb. 18.
