Women's Basketball Downs Cal Poly, 64-58

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (13-9, 6-3 Big West) defeated Cal Poly (10-11, 3-5 BWC), 64-58 at the Mott Athletic Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif. It is the first-ever win for the Rainbow Wahine at Cal Poly (10-11, 3-5 BWC) in five tries. Senior Destiny King was clutch down the stretch, scoring eight of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter alone, while fellow senior Marissa Wimbley drained a trio of treys in the second half and scored five points in the last four minutes to help UH seal the win. In just her second start this season, Megan Huff played a solid game in the post, adding six points and two steals with a game-high nine rebounds, a season-high four blocked shots and a career-high four assists.
 
King shot 5-of-10 from the floor and was 2-of-4 from the free throw line with five rebounds on the night. It is the 10th time this season that she's notched double-digit points for the 'Bows and the sixth time that she's led UH in scoring. Cal Poly's Dynn Leaupepe scored five-straight points to bring the Mustangs back within three points of Hawai'i at 56-53 with 2:29 left in the game, King refused to allow her team to lose, making back-to-back buckets to extend the 'Bows' lead to seven points 1:30 left in the game—the Rainbow Wahine never looked back.
 
Wimbley came off the bench and played 22 minutes in the win. She was 3-for-8 in field goals, making all three shots from beyond the 3-point line to tie her career-high. She also tied her season-high with a total of 11 points in the win. Wimbley also chipped in with four rebounds.
 
In the first quarter both teams struggled offensively with both shooting 4-for-15 from the floor for a 26.7 field goal percentage. The game picked up in the second half, with UH shooting 7-for-15 for 46.7%, but after leading for most of the first half, Cal Poly made a 10-to-2 run starting with less than five minutes left in the second quarter. The Mustangs tied the score at 27-27 on a trey by CP's Gabby Grupalo and then took their first lead of the game at 29-27 on a basket by D. Leaupepe. The score was tied once more at 29-29, but Cal Poly took a 31-29 lead into halftime.
 
Hawai'i outscored the Mustangs in the third quarter, 17-14 to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth the Rainbow Wahine came through with key shots and stops. King was 3-for-3 in field goals and 2-for-2 from the free throw line with 29-seconds left in the game.
 
Hawai'i as a team, tied their season-high making eight three-pointers in the game—including one each from Wimbley and Olivia Crawford in the fourth quarter. UH outrebounded Cal Poly, 40-to-34, but it was the Mustangs who outscored the 'Bows 33-to-28 in bench points and 28-to-20 in second chance points. It was the 19th time this season and eighth-straight game that UH has outrebounded their opponents on the glass. For Hawai'i it marked their third-straight win, while Cal Poly lost its fourth straight game.
 
The Mustangs were led by an impressive performance by Dynn Leaupepe who scored a career-high 31 points. Amanda Lovely pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
 
The Rainbow Wahine remain on the road and will play at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Feb. 6 before returning home for two Thursday games in the following two weeks against Long Beach State and UC Davis respectively.
