With the win, the Rainbow Wahine claimed sole possession of second place in the Big West as they improved to 16-9 overall and 9-3 in conference, while the Aggies fell to 15-10 overall and 8-4 in the Big West.
Destiny King led the charge, recording her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Sarah Toeaina also added 13 points and
Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 12 at the Stan Sheriff Center on Thursday night.
The Rainbow Wahine got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind to the Aggies 13-0 before getting their first point on a King free throw with 2:07 left in the opening frame.
Megan Huff then converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:47 left in the quarter to help get UH's offense back on track.
Reserves
Briana Harris and
Marissa Wimbley helped to spark the 'Bows at the start of the second quarter with Harris making two free throws followed by Wimbley draining a trey to spur on a 9-to-0 UH run to begin the frame. The Rainbow Wahine kept things rolling, outscoring the Aggies 21-to-9 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 27-26 lead. Hawai'i was chasing UC Davis for much of the quarter, but King got a steal and a layup to give UH their first lead of the game at 27-26 with 1:43 left in the half.
In the second half, it was all Hawai'i as the 'Bows continued where they left off in the first half. UH started the third quarter on a 12-to-0 run and if you count UH's last two baskets in the first half, Hawai'i scored 16-straight points bridging the second and third quarters. UH outscored the Aggies 25-7 in the third, shooting 8-of-17 from the floor for 47.1% while UCD only scored two field goals in 14 attempts to shoot 14.3% in the period. Hawai'i allowed the Aggies to score just 16 points in the second and third quarters combined.
UH led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter with 4:26 left in the game and Hawai'i maintained its large lead throughout the fourth quarter.
King started the game 0-for-5 from the floor, but then caught fire to make six of her next eight shots. She also had a season-high 13 rebounds with an assist and three steals. It was the 12th time this season that King scored in double-digits. Her 13 points moves her into a tie for No. 20 amongst UH's all-time scoring leaders with 990 total points in her four-year career. She entered the game at No. 22 with 977 points and moved past BJ Itoman (1996-99) who is now at No. 22 with 979 career points.
Toeaina was one point shy of tying her career- and season-high with 13 points tonight. She shot 3-for-7-including one 3-pointer-from the floor and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She also added four rebounds.
Karaitiana was 4-of-10 in shooting and 2-for-2 in 3-pointers. She pulled down five rebounds and tied her season-high with five assists. With two made treys, Karaitiana is now just one made 3-pointer away from tying Nani Cockett at No. 2 in UH history. Karaitiana currently has 127 and Cockett, who played in 1994 and from '96-'98, has 128. The all-time 3-point leader is Megan Tinnin who drained 167 treys in her career.
As a team, the 'Bows defense forced UCD into 18 turnovers, from which UH scored 22 points. UH's defense and rebounding were key to them overcoming a slow start. UH outscored UCD in the paint 28-to-18 and in bench points, 28-to-9. Hawai'i continued their dominance on the glass as well, out-rebounding the Aggies, 42-to-30.
Hawai'i hits the road for one last regular season road trip to take on Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 25 and league-leader UC Riverside on Feb. 27 before returning home for their last homestand of the year.
