Stefan Jankovic had a game for the ages on Thursday night, delivering a career-high 34 points on a sensational 12-13 shooting to help the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to a gritty 69-63 win at CSUN in Big West Conference action at the Matadome.
Â
The win keeps the 'Bows (21-3, 10-1 BWC) at the top of the league standings and sets up a showdown with UC Irvine this Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
Â
On a night where
Aaron Valdes was a late scratch and
Isaac Fleming was getting his feet wet after a four-game absence, Jankovic poured in over half of UH's points, 23 of them after halftime. He also shot a team-best 8-10 from the free throw line and corralled eight rebounds.
Â
Roderick Bobbitt contributed nine points and seven assists with
Mike Thomas pulling down 11 rebounds, two off his career-high.
Sai Tummala added four rebounds and six points including a monster three pointer to put UH ahead by two points with 51 seconds to play.
Â
Playing against Rainbow Warrior guard and brother Quincy, Kendall Smith led the Matadors (9-17, 4-8 BWC) with 13 points and three assists.
Quincy Smith added eight points and six rebounds for the 'Bows.
Â
The 'Bows held a six-point halftime lead and looked prime to run away midway through the second half. Tummala hit a three pointer from the corner to give UH a 43-34 lead with 12:36 to play. It would then be all CSUN for a good chunk of time as the Matadors went on a 16-2 run over the next 4:25 to take a five-point lead.
Â
Jankovic singlehandedly willed the 'Bows back, scoring eight straight UH points including a three-pointer to reclaim his team's lead at 54-51.
Â
The last two minutes saw two ties and two lead changes, the last from Tummala's three pointer to put UH up for good. A two-handed flush from Smith punctuated the win.
Â
The 'Bows and Anteaters tip off on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 p.m. PT (6:30 p.m. HT) in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
