SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team began competition in the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southwest Regional Championships held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.  On Thursday, all three Rainbow Wahine doubles teams won their Round of 64 matches while three of UH's young guns advanced to the Round of 32 in singles.
 
The day started with Hawai'i's doubles teams going undefeated. UH's duo of Petra Melounova and Cindy Nguyen defeated Big West foes, Julie Gerard and Lena Pacholski of Long Beach State, 8-3 while Nikola Dolakova and Roxanne Resma knocked off Grand Canyon's Celina Buhr and Marie Deleval, 8-3. The Rainbow Wahine pair of Marina Hruba and Michelle Pits nearly blanked San Diego's Nicole Anderson and Sophia Chow, 8-1. UH's fourth duo of Alzbeta Houbova and Klára Pribylová had a bye in the first round.
 
In singles, only three Rainbow Wahine played in the Round of 128 with the rest of the team starting in the Round of 64 after receiving a bye in the first round. Dolakova and Pribylova both won their Round of 128 matches in straight sets. Dolakova held off Marie Deleval of Grand Canyon, 6-4, 7-6 while Pribylova hung on to defeat GCU's Kyle Waschuck, 7-5, 6-4.
 
In the Round of 64, it was three of UH's freshmen who were able to advance to Friday's Round of 32. Melounova reeled off a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 win over San Diego's Maria Torres. Dolakova dispatched CSUN's Mari Udagawa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.  Pits was blanked in the first set, but then came back to dominate against Constance Branstine from UC Irvine, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1. Melounova, Dolakova and Pits will all be vying for a spot in the Round of 16 on Friday at 10:30 am (PT). Melounova will take on the No. 1 seed Lauren Marker of Arizona; Dolakova will face 7th-seeded Jessica Failla of USC; and Pits will battle 11th-seeded Alaina Miller of UCLA.
