WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Despite a 15-6 advantage in shots after halftime, the Hawai'i women's soccer team couldn't break a scoreless tie against Long Beach State on Friday night, battling to a 0-0 draw against the 49ers at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Monk Berger needed five saves for her seventh shutout of the season and third in a row.
Addie Steiner tallied six of Hawai'i's 18 total shots, and
Raisa Strom-Okimoto had five. The Rainbow Wahine out-shout LBSU 18-11 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal, while the 49ers owned a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Long Beach State (6-6-3, 2-1-2 Big West) controlled the game early on, dominating possession and earning five corner kicks in the first half while out-shooting the Rainbow Wahine (9-3-2, 2-2-1 Big West) 5-3 in the opening frame. Hawai'i settled into a rhythm near the end of the first half, and carried that momentum into the second where the Rainbow Wahine enjoyed a 9-3 lead in shots, including 4-2 in shots on goal.
Hawai'i kept that pressure on until the very end, out-shooting the 49ers 5-1 in the second overtime and 6-3 overall in overtime, but came up empty.
With the tie, Hawai'i remains unbeaten at home in 2016, moving to 7-0-2 at WPSS. Hawai'i's home finale is Oct. 23 against Cal State Fullerton.
