HONOLULU – Outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic recorded his 1,000th career kill during sixth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team's four-set victory over Grand Canyon Friday night, in the a non-conference match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19.

Zarkovic became the 16th member of the school's 1,000-kill club after pounding his eighth kill early in the third set. The senior from Belgrade, Serbia finished with 16 kills, two service aces and eight digs as UH improved to a perfect 5-0 at home this season and extended its home win streak to 14 dating back to last season.

Freshman opposite Stijn van Tilburg led the way with a match-high 18 kills, hitting .343 while also recording seven digs and seven blocks in arguably the most all-around match of his collegiate career. It also marked the seventh straight match that both van Tilburg and Zarkovic reached double figures in kills.

As a team, the Warriors (6-1) hit .376 and recorded a season-high 11 blocks.

For the second straight night, Gerrard Lipscombe led the Lopes (5-2) with a team-high 11 kills.

The Lopes ran out to an 8-5 lead in Set 1 with the help of four early blocks. But after trailing 15-12, the Warriors scored four straight out of the media timeout for a 16-15 lead. The teams traded points until UH went on a 5-1 run for a 22-20 lead. The Lopes tied it a 22 and again at 23 before Zarkovic gave UH set point and back-up setter Joe Worsley ended it with an ace.

The Lopes led from the early on in Set 2 and extended their lead to 20-15 following an ace by Tanner Maxwell. Hawai'i rallied to within 21-18 but three straight kills by GCU's Christian Ward put the set out of reach and the Lopes snapped UH's 13-set home win streak to start the season.

Down 10-7, the Warriors outscored the Lopes 8-4 to reach the media timeout with a 15-14 lead. A kill by Zarkovic and a pair of GCU errors gave UH a 19-15 advantage. Moments later, an ace by Zarkovic sandwiched between van Tilburg kills put UH on top 23-17 en route to the 25-18 victory.

In Set 4, the Warriors gain a little bit of cushion at 18-14 following kills by van Tilburg and Fey and a solo block by Franciskovic. That would be all the Warriors needed to close out the match which ended anticlimactically with a serve error by Lipscombe.

The Warriors continue their three-week homestand with a pair of matches against UC San Diego, Friday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 31 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
