Meet ResultsSEATTLE—The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team took ninth place in a tight competition at the Sundodger Invitational at Seattle's Lincoln Park on Saturday morning.
"Great efforts across the board," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "First travel meet and 6k race for six of our runners—five freshmen and one transfer. A few runners were a bit under the weather this morning, but we're very pleased with everyone. It's been a great start to our season and we'll build on today."
Host Washington topped the team standings with a near-perfect score of 17, followed by fellow Pac-12 squad Washington State with 88 points and Nevada in third with 93 points to round our teams under the century mark. A mere 3:25 on the clock separated the total times of the next six teams, with Portland State in fourth (130 points), followed by Oregon State (141 points), Seattle (156 points), Fresno State (163 points) and Tulane (171).
The Rainbow Wahine logged a score of 195 points in the nine-team women's 6k race—their first at the distance this season. Sporting a very young team, two of the Rainbow Wahine superseded the top 6k time from a year ago and 6-of-8 listed better than the top two times last season.
Pacing UH for the second time in as many meets, freshman
Camille Campos topped the Rainbow Wahine with a time of 22:14.83 for 35th place. Freshman
Piper McDonald followed in 44th with a mark of 22:33.10. Lane CC transfer
Alli Cross was third for UH, coming in 49th with a time of 22:36.72. Last season's leader, sophomore
Montana Martinez went out fast but fell back down the stretch, finishing just 20 seconds behind her top time last season with a mark of 22:52.67 in 57th. Rounding out the scoring group for UH was freshman
Sabrina Sterbis in 60th (23:02.74).
Also running for the Rainbow Wahine, freshman
Haley Beaumont (23:16.58 ), junior
Caitlyn Foss (23:45.71 ) and
Tristan Setzer (24:08.58 ) finished 67th, 74th and 81st, respectively.
Marking their first meet on the mainland, the Rainbow Wahine gained a preview for conditions at the NCAA West Regional, which will be run in Seattle later this season on a different course.
Next up is a return to O'ahu's north shore, with the BYU-Hawaii Invitational scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 26, in La'ie.
