HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i was represented well at this year's Creative Energy/Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles Tournament at the Kailua Racquet Club this past weekend.
Marcel Chan, who will be a junior this coming season, partnered with recent alum
Carter Lam to finish in fourth place after falling to Mikael Maatta and Jan Axel Tribler in a tightly contested battle, 8-6. Chan and Lam, who were seeded fourth in the tournament, earlier fell in the semifinals to the top-seeded duo of Ikaika Jobe and Dennis Lajola, 6-4, 6-3. Jobe served as the UH men's volunteer coach for three season from 2011-13 while Lajola was a four-time all-conference player who was named the 2011 WAC Player of the Year during his stellar UH career. Jobe and Lajola fell in the championship match to Hendrik Bode and Nikola Petrov, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Chan also was awarded the Sam Caldwell Amateur Athlete Award which is bestowed upon the amateur who goes the furthest in the tournament. It is the second straight season that Chan has earned the prestigious award.
