Men’s Tennis Bounces Back Against UCSD

Box Score

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team closed out its regular season on a high note Sunday afternoon, dispatching UC San Diego 4-1 at the Northview Tennis Courts.

The Rainbow Warriors (10-9, 3-3 Big West) overcame a dropped doubles point with a dominant performance in singles play, winning four straight matches in straight sets to clinch the conference victory.

The afternoon began with a tightly contested doubles round. While the UH duo of Toa Maeda and Azuma Visaya made quick work of their opponents with a 6-1 win at No. 2, the Tritons (9-15, 1-5 Big West) rallied to take the opening point. UCSD secured the advantage after a 6-3 win at No. 3 and a grueling 7-6 (7) tiebreaker victory at the No. 1 spot.

Once the match shifted to singles, however, it was all Hawai'i.

Kosuke Nakanishi ignited the comeback at No. 3, surrendering only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Trevor Nguyen. He was followed closely by Azuma Visaya, who dismantled Oliver Worth 6-2, 6-0 at the top flight to give the Warriors their first lead of the day.

Toa Maeda put Hawai'i on the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Adriano Dzhenev provided the finishing blow at the No. 4 position, defeating Abhinav Chunduru 6-3, 6-2 to secure the match.

At the time of the clinch, both UH's Timothy Li and Kent Mueller were leading in the second sets of their respective matches, which were left unfinished.

The Rainbow Warriors now turn their attention to the Big West Championships, having secured a .500 finish in conference play. The tournament begins on Wednesday, April 22 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
