HONOLULU–The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team pulled away in its final home match of the season to defeat UC Davis, 4-1. To avoid expected inclement weather, the match was moved up a day from its originally scheduled slot on Friday.
With the win, the Rainbow Warriors snapped their four-match losing streak to improve their overall record to 9-8 while moving to 2-2 in Big West play.
The match started with singles and was especially significant for UH's two seniors—
Timothy Li and
Azuma Visaya—as they both delivered crucial wins in their final home appearances.
Toa Maeda sparked the momentum right out of the gate with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 6 spot.
Kent Mueller followed with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Despite a loss at the No. 3 position, the seniors closed out the match over the Aggies.
Li battled through a three-set thriller at No. 2 to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Visaya clinched the victory at the No. 1 spot with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 performance.
The Rainbow Warriors will honor their seniors, Li and Visaya, in conjunction with the Rainbow Wahine's Senior Day celebration after their match vs. UC Davis on Saturday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. HT. The Rainbow Warriors will finish the regular season on the road. UH will take on UC Irvine on Friday, April 17 followed by a Sunday match at UC San Diego on April 19.
