Rainbow Wahine Well Represented At Water Polo World Championships

KAZAN, Russia – The 2015 FINA World Water Polo Championships wrapped up its final day with the United States coming out on top after defeating the Netherlands, 5-4 for gold on Friday night. Three former Rainbow Wahine represented the University of Hawai`i among the Dutch national team.

Out of 16 different national water polo teams, the Netherlands took second place after a grueling seven-day tournament. Former Rainbow Wahine and Dutch natives Leonie Van Der Molen (2007-'10), Amarens Genee (2010-'13) and Dagmar Genee (2009-'11) played a part in earning the country's fifth silver medal at the event. Van Der Molen and Dagmar Genee each finished the tournament with two goals apiece, while Amarens Genee scored one against Kazakhstan (Aug. 1).

In addition to the Dutch trio, five more former and current Rainbow Wahine participated for their respective national teams to combine for a total of eight representing UH at the World Championships. Top athletes from around the globe battled it out for the title, including five from the United States' 2012 Olympic Championship squad. Van Der Molen and the Genee sisters played alongside Yasemin Smit, a member of the Dutch team that won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Current UH team member Gabi Mantellato Dias wrapped up the event with three goals for Brazil. The team finished 10th overall with a 2-4 record.

All-American Monika Eggens (2009-'11, 2013) scored a staggering 10 goals over the week, while sister Carmen Eggens (2008-'11) contributed six for the Canadians. Canada finished 11th overall, splitting 3-3.

Recent graduates Danielle Lewis (2011-'14) and Caity Lopes da Silva (2012-'15) led New Zealand in scoring consistently throughout the tournament. Lewis contributed six while Lopes da Silva tallied two as the team finished 13th overall.
