Softball Hosts Long Beach State Series; Saturday Is "Power in Pink"

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (23-16, 4-2 Big West) returns home to host a three-game series against defending Big West champions, Long Beach State (16-21, 3-3 Big West) this weekend. The two teams will square off in a single game on Friday, April 10 and conclude the series on Saturday, April 11 with a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
 
Hawai'i is in second place in the conference with a 4-2 record after capturing last week's series at Cal State Fullerton, 2-1. The Rainbow Wahine won the first game 5-1 on Friday, but the Titans came back to take the second game, 7-2. Hawai'i edged out Fullerton in the rubber match, 8-6 in eight innings to capture the series.
 
Sophomore transfer Kanani Aina Cabrales won both games for UH and took her streak of not allowing an earned run to 23-straight innings. In the series finale she fired a career-high eight innings for the complete game win. Overall, she is 12-10 with four shutouts, 11 complete games, and a 2.48 ERA in 124.1 innings pitched. In conference, she has a 0.72 ERA with a 3-1 record in 29.0 innings. Freshman Brittany Hitchcock has a 10-6 record and a 2.56 ERA in 109.1 innings pitched. She has recorded three shut outs and eight complete games in 20 starts.
 
Sophomore Sarina Jaramillo leads UH with a .340 batting average (36-for-106) with four doubles and 18 RBI. Fellow sophomore Heather Morales is hitting .324 (35-for-108) with a team-high 27 RBI while senior Kayla Wartner leads UH with nine doubles and eight home runs with a .318 batting average (34-for-107). She is tied with Keiki Carlos for the team lead with 28 runs scored. Carlos is hitting .298 with a team-high 37 hits in 124 at-bats with eight doubles, five home runs, and 19 RBI.
 
Long Beach State 49ers
The 49ers come to Honolulu with a 16-21 overall record and are in a three-way tie for third in the BWC with a 3-3 record in conference. Last week, Long Beach State went 1-2 in a tight series at UC Riverside. The Highlanders won the first two games, 3-2 with the first game going to 10 innings. LBSU won the series finale, 4-1.
 
Senior Shayna Kimbrough leads the 49ers with a .381 average (43-for-113). She has scored 24 runs with five doubles a triple and nine RBI. Julia Lombardi is second on the team hitting .342 (38-for-111) with 16 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, and is tied for the team lead with six home runs. Lauren Lombardi is third on the team hitting .339 (37-for-109) with a team-high 10 doubles, 36 RBI and six home runs.
 
In the circle, Christina Clermont leads the team with a 2.24 ERA in 115.2 innings pitched She is 9-6 in 24 appearances with nine complete games. In conference, Clermont is a perfect 3-0 in Big West games with a 0.78 ERA with two shutouts. She has thrown 27.0 innings with 10 walks and 25 strike outs while holding opposing batters to a .183 batting average. Amanda Hansen is 4-9 with a 5.93 ERA in 20 appearances and 56.2 innings.  In the Big West, she is 0-2 in three appearances and seven innings pitched.

The team will be wearing special pink Under Armour jerseys for the doubleheader.

Series History: Long Beach State leads the series against UH, 54-26 with the 49ers winning the last five straight games. Last year, LBSU swept the 'Bows in California winning by the scores of 5-3, 8-2, and 3-0.
