Men's Tennis Falls In First Round of Big West Tournament To UCSB

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The No. 6-seeded University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to the No. 3-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 4-0 on Thursday morning in the first round on the Big West Men's Tennis Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Rainbow Warriors finish the season at 6-14 overall while UCSB (13-9) advances to the second round of the tournament. The Gauchos captured the doubles point with wins at one and two. Nils Schuhmann and Joakim Pinola lost on the No. 2 court to the UCSB pair of Tobias Galskov and Ziad Sultan, 6-3. But UH evened things in doubles as UH's No. 3 duo of Felix Albert and Chas Okamoto edged out UCSB's Morgan Mays and Andrew Riminton, 7-5. But UCSB clinched the doubles point on the No. 1 court when Nathan Eshmade and Erik Johnson held off Marcel Chan and Carter Lam, 6-4.

The Gauchos would continue to ride their momentum in singles play as they gained victories in the first matches to sweep Hawai'i. UH's Pinola fell to Teague Hamilton 6-1, 6-1. Felix Albert put up a great effort, but he too fell short against UCSB's Cody Rakela 6-3, 6-4. It was up to the 'Bows Marcel Chan to keep UH's match hopes alive against Erik Johnsson, but Chan would fall short in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, thus sealing UCSB's victory. The top three singles matches were all closer affairs with the three seniors--Schuhmann, Okamoto and Lam. No. 1 Schuhmann won the first set over Galskov, 6-0 but fell in the second, 2-6. He was ahead 3-1 in the final set before the match was ended. Okamoto also captured the first set 7-5 and was behind in the second 2-5 to Eshmade when the match was called.  No. 3 Lam's match was also in the third set after he won the first set, 6-3 over Mays. The match was all square after Mays took the second set 6-4 and it was 1-0 with Lam leading when UCSB sealed their win.

It was the final match for three Rainbow Warrior four-year letter winners Carter Lam, Chas Okamoto, and Nils Schuhmann
