Heather Morales cranked her second home run in as many days to help lift UH to the win, while UH pitcher
Brittany Hitchcock fired a complete game to earn the win at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Friday night.
The Hawai'i win snapped the Beavers' eight game win streak, while UH extended their own win streak to five. It marked the 'Bows first win over a Pac-12 opponentthis season after falling to UCLA, Washington and California earlier this season.Hitchcock threw seven complete innings, allowing one run while scattering seven hits. She walked two while striking out six Beavers to improve her record to 6-3 on the season. After allowing runners on in the early innings, Hitchcock and the defense settled down and retired nine straight batters between the third and sixth innings.
Oregon State started the game with back-to-back singles and later loaded the bases with two outs. But Hitchcock escaped unscathed with a strike out looking to thwart the Beavers.
In the bottom of the first, Hawai'i jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off of Morales' blast.
Jordan Burton started the rally, reaching first safely on a throwing error on the shortstop. She moved to second on a Wartner hit that ricocheted off the pitcher. After a strike out, Morales launched the three-run home run over the leftfield fence. It was her fourth home run of the season. She now has eight RBI in UH's two gamesplayed inthe tournament.
The Beavers got one run back in the top of the second on an RBI single by Mikela Manewa that drove in Lovey Lopez from third to cut their deficit to 3-1.
Hawai'i added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Wartner that drove in
Tayana Mata from second to give UH a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning.
The Beavers' Manewa got a leadoff walk to start the seventh, but Hitchcock got a strike out swinging for the first out.
Sarina Jaramillo caught a slow line drive for the second out and Mata, UH's second baseman,made a diving stop on a grounder up the middle and flipped to Jaramillo while still on the ground for the game ending out.
Oregon State's Beverly Miller also threw a complete game in the loss which dropped her record to 10-5. She gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strike outs.
Hawai'i continues action in the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament on Saturday. The 'Bows will face Utah at 4:00 pm.
