Scoresheet HONOLULU - The No. 6 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (11-7, 1-1 Big West Conference) defeated the Brazilian National Team, 11-10 Saturday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
Paula Chillida Esforzado led the Rainbow Wahine scoring four of UH's 10 goals. Meanwhile, former Rainbow Wahine
Mirella Coutinho scored five for Brazil.
After falling to Brazil last Sunday, the Rainbow Wahine fought back strong from the start with a 5-3 edge in the first quarter. Junior Chillida Esforzado scored three-straight goals midway through the period. After Brazil's Marina Zablith cut UH's lead down 3-1,
Claire Nixon responded with back-to-back goals for a commanding lead.
After
Chloe Barr extended the Rainbow Wahine's lead 6-3 in the second quarter, Brazil exploded for a 4-1 run to tie it by halftime 7-7. Following a penalty called on Zablith,
Caity Lopes da Silva successfully converted the shot for UH. However, in the final minute of the half, Zablith scored to tie it.
Brazil committed an exclusion foul early in the third allowing Chillida Esforzado to take advantage of the power-play to regain UH's lead 8-7. The teams matched goal-for-goal to follow, but
Megan Ottoboni scored one at the end of the quarter to pull ahead of Brazil 10-9.
In the final quarter, Barr netted a goal off of UH's 6-on-5 advantage extending the lead 11-9. Although Brazil's Flavia Vigna was able to score with just 50 seconds remaining, it wasn't enough to pull ahead of the Rainbow Wahine.
