Box Score (html)HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (17-13, 0-0 Big West) was edged out by Virginia Tech in a pitchers' duel, 1-0 on Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Kanani Aina Cabrales suffered the loss with a strong complete game effort.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings with goose eggs across the board. But Virginia Tech's Katey Smith led the sixth inning off with a solo home run over the left field fence.
That was all the scoring the Hokies would need as Maggie Tyler tossed a complete game to earn her ninth win of the season. Tyler scattered five hits with a walk and 11 strike outs.
It was arguably one of Aina Cabrales' strongest efforts of the season. She evened her record at 8-8 overall with the loss. She gave up the one run while spacing six hits with no walks and two strike outs.
Hawai'i is now 0-4 in the tourney with one game left. UH concludes their fifth and final tournament on Sunday. The first game of the day features Columbia vs. St. Bonaventure at 11:00 a.m. Hawai'i will play Columbia at 1:00 p.m. in the final game of the Hawai'i Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic.
