Women's Hoops Heads To Big West Tourney As No. 1 Seed

2015 Big West Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket
Game Notes

ANAHEIM, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (22-7, 14-2 Big West) enters this week's Big West Conference tournament as the No. 1 seed with the double bye. The Rainbow Wahine will start their play in the tournament in the semifinals and will face the lowest remaining seed on Friday, March 13 at 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine are taking their 14-game win streak into the tournament. It is the longest win streak during newly named Big West Coach of the Year Laura Beeman's three-year tenure. The 14-game win streak ties the 1989-90 team's longest win streak in program history. It is also the longest since UH won 19-straight games under then head coach Vince Goo in 1997-98. Hawai'i clinched their first conference title with a 47-46 win at Long Beach State on Feb. 26. It is their first conference title since the 'Bows won the Western Athletic Pacific Division crown in 1997-98 under Goo. It also marks UH's third Big West title after Goo led the 'Bows to back-to-back first place finishes in 1992-93 and 1993-94. Hawai'i is looking for its second conference tournament title, UH won the Big West tourney in 1995-96.

Last week, UH had the difficult task of traveling to face UC Santa Barbara for a Thursday game and then returning home for their Saturday night Senior Game against Cal State Fullerton. The 'Bows came through with a pair of lopsided wins in which their offense got rolling and their stifling defense stymied their opponents, holding both teams under 40 points. UH defeated the Gauchos, 60-36 and then pulled away from the Titans, 61-38.

Overall, Hawai'i enters the tournament as the No. 1 ranked team in conference in scoring margin (+9.3); scoring defense (58.7); field goal percent defense (.363); rebounding margin (+9.3); rebounding offense (44.2); blocked shots (3.62); offensive rebounds (15.76); defensive rebounds (28.41); defensive rebound percentage (.734) and offensive rebounding percentage (.391).

Individually, senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu leads Hawai'i into the tournament with team highs in scoring (12.0 ppg); rebounds (6.4 rpg); assists (72); blocked shots (35) and steals (39). Fellow senior Ashleigh Karaitiana is the only other Rainbow Wahine to be averaging over 10 points with 10.2 per game. She leads UH with 39 3-pointers made this season and is second on the team with 69 assists and 34 steals.
