HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team will play East Carolina in a single game on Tuesday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. before it hosts its final non-conference tournament, the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic. Columbia, St. Bonaventure, Western Illinois, and Viginia Tech will all be in Honolulu for the five-day tournament which runs from March 11-15 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawai'i went 4-1 this past week in the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament with wins over Oregon State, Utah, Longwood and East Carolina.
Heather Morales earned the tourney's Most Valuable Player award for leading UH at the plate with a .462 batting average (6-for-13) with two home runs—including her first career grand slam—with a team-high nine RBI.
Kayla Wartner was close behind, hitting an even .400 (4-for-10) with a team-high five runs scored. She belted out a double and a home run and drove in six runs for the 'Bows. UH pitcher
Brittany Hitchcock was voted Most Valuable Pitcher after going a perfect 3-0 in the tourney with a 0.69 ERA in 20-1/3 innings pitched over four appearances.
Overall, Wartner leads UH at the plate, hitting an overall .400 (24-for-60) with team highs of 19 runs scored, seven doubles, and six home runs. '
Ulu Matagiese is hitting .306 (11-for-36) with a double, a triple and two home runs while Morales is third on the team with a .304 average (17-for-56). Morales leads UH with 22 RBI on the season .
In the pitching circle, Hawai'i's Hitchcock and Kanani 'Aina Cabrales have seen the bulk of the pitching responsibilities. Hitchcock enters this week with a 6-3 record and a 3.00 ERA in 60-2/3 innings pitched. She has 21 walks and 27 strike outs in 13 appearances. 'Aina Cabrales is 7-6 overall with a 3.46 ERA in 64.2/3 innings pitched. She has 28 walks with 46 strike outs in 19 appearances and has three complete game shutouts under her belt.
