Softball Splits To End Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team knocked off St. Mary's, 3-0 to advance to the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic championship game against No. 4 Oklahoma. But the Sooners powered past Hawai'i to capture the tourney title, 8-0 in five innings.

UH's Kanani Aina Cabrales fired her second complete game shut-out win of the tournament. She scattered four hits with two walks and three strike outs in seven innings of work.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. Tayana Mata started things with a two-out walk. Lindsey Willmon followed with a single to right that allowed Mata to sprint all the way to third. With runners at the corners, UH executed a double steal to perfection with Willmon drawing the throw to second and Mata crossing the plate.
 
In the sixth, UH padded their lead by scoring two runs. Rachel Lack started the rally with her first collegiate hit—a single to right-centerfield. Leisha Li`ili`i then drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at first and second. Heather Morales then drilled a single to left-centerfield that scored Lack from second. Keiki Carlos dropped a bunt single to load the bases for Saraina Jaramillo who lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Li`ili`i from third.
 
St. Mary's Lujane Mussadi took the loss, dropping her record to 1-2. She threw five-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strike outs. Katie Moss tossed one-plus innings allowing one run on two hits with a walk and a strike out.

The Sooners powered past Hawai'i to capture the tourney title with an 8-0 win in five innings. OU's Paige Parker tossed a perfect game to pick up her second win of the tournament. She fanned nine UH batters.
 
UH's Brittany Hitchcock took the loss, dropping her record to 1-2 overall. She allowed three runs on four hits with a walk in two innings. Cabrales finished the game, throwing the final two-and-two-thirds innings. She allowed five runs on six hits with three walks and a strike out in her second appearance of the day.
 
Oklahoma scored three runs in the second inning, all coming off a Nichole Pendley home run. The Sooners added three more in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to end the game on a walk off hit by Tori Nirschl.
 
Hawai'I will now hit the road for their annual trek to Las Vegas, Nev. for UNLV's Desert Classic, Feb. 12-15. UH will take on BYU, Utah State, Utah Valley, UCLA, Seattle and Portland State.
