Women's Hoops Focuses On UC Davis In Battle Of Top Two Teams

Game Notes

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (18-7, 10-2 Big West) battles second place UC Davis (13-10, 8-3 Big West) this Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 p.m. Hawai'i will put their 10-game win streak on the line against the Aggies who are on a five game win streak of their own.

Hawai'i remains atop the Big West standings for the second straight week after soundly defeating UC Irvine, 75-37. The 10-game win streak for UH is the longest during head coach Laura Beeman's tenure and the longest since Vince Goo's 1997-98 Rainbow Wahine squad won 19-straight. It is the best conference start since UH began the 2000-01 Western Athletic Conference season at 10-2 also under Goo.

Against the Anteaters, the 'Bows got off to a slow start in the first half, but won going away in the second half. The Rainbow Wahine shot 56.3% and outscored UCI 45-14 in the second half alone. For the game, the 'Bows almost doubled up UCI on the glass, outrebounding their opponents 59-to-25 for a +34 advantage—their biggest rebounding margin of the season. UCI's 37 points scored was the lowest total allowed by UH this season and the lowest since UH allowed LIU Brooklyn to score just 33 in head coach Laura Beeman's first season, 2012-13. In the second half against UCI, UH's offense started clicking on all cylinders while their stifling defense clamped down on UC Irvine, holding them to just six points through the first 18 minutes of the second half as the 'Bows went on a 38-to-6 run until the Anteaters sank two treys and a jumper with less than three minutes left on the clock. UCI was 1-for-22 from the floor during a span of over 15 minutes during Hawai'i's epic run. Hawai'i pounded out points paint, outscoring UCI, 38-to-16. But it was UH's bench that did the most damage to the Anteaters, outscoring their reserves, 45-to-4. UH's biggest lead was 41 points with 1:19 left in the game. The 'Bows had just eight turnovers with 17 assists. All 13 players suited up played and pulled down at least one rebound and all but two scored at least two points.

Hawai'i continues to rise in the RPI as well. At the start of this week, the Rainbow Wahine jumped 22 places from this time last week to No. 80 after wins over UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton last week. UH is the only Big West team in the RPI's top 100 teams. Long Beach State fell from 70 last week to 102 this week after falling to Cal Poly in overtime on Saturday.

Overall, senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu continues to lead Hawai'i in scoring, rebounds (tied with Destiny King), steals and blocks. She is averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game with a total of 282 points overall. Kuehu has a team-high 34 steals and a team and career-high 30 blocked shots. She is third on the team with 545 assists.

Ashleigh Karaitiana is second on the team, averaging 10.4 points per game with a team-high 35 made 3-point shots. She is second on the team with 63 assists and third with 30 steals. Destiny King is averaging just a shade under 10 points at 9.6 per game. She has scored in double figures in seven out of UH's last 10 games.

UC Davis (13-10, 8-3 Big West)
UC Davis maintained sole possession of second place in the Big West at 8-3 thanks to scoring a conference record 17 3-pointers en route to an 83-66 road win at Long Beach State. Senior guard Sydnee Fipps tied the UCD record with her 31st 20-point game against the Beach, finishing with an even 20 points in 26 minutes. She hit five treys with five boards, two assists and two blocked shots in the win.

At the beginning of the week, senior Kelsey Harris, freshman Rachel Nagel and senior Sydnee Fipps are the three most accurate shooters from deep in the Big West. Harris leads the league at 45.9% (61-133), Fipps is second at 43.4% (59-136) and Nagel is third at 42.3% (22-52).
