H-TV: Game HighlightsHONOLULU –
Alex Sawelson had three hits and scored two runs but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning and fell to No. 17 Oregon, 3-2, in their series finale on Monday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Â
The game was not without its controversy. With Oregon runners on second and third with one out in the ninth inning, UH reliever
Josh Pigg fielded a sharply hit grounder from J.B. Bryant allowing him to catch Phil Craig-St. Louis in a rundown between third and home. Pigg attempted to put a tag on Craig-St. Louis at the plate but the home plate umpire ruled he was safe. Oregon went on to add another two runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
Pigg (0-1) was tagged with the loss in one and one-third innings of work. Stephen Nogosek picked up his second win of the series out of the bullpen.
Â
The 'Bows (1-3) plated one run in each of the second and sixth innings. Sawelson and
Eric Ramirez (2 H, 1 RBI) with Sawelson later scoring off an
Alan Baldwin (1 H, 1 R) looper to left field.
Â
Sawelson and Ramirez were at it again in the sixth inning to help UH to a 2-0 lead. Sawelson led off the inning with a double then Ramirez drove him home with a base hit to right.
Â
UH had runners at the corners with one out in the ninth, but
Jonathan Weeks, pinch-hitting for
JJ Kitaoka, and
Matt LoCoco couldn't deliver.
Â
The 'Bows will have just one day off before beginning a five-game series versus Hofstra on Wednesday, Feb. 18. First pitch is set for 6:35 at Les Murakami Stadium.
