Box Score (html)HONOLULU –
Quintin Torres-Costa had a career-high eight strikeouts but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to No. 15 Oregon on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The 'Bows loaded the bases in the ninth inning with just one out but could not score the tying run.
Alan Baldwin laid down a beauty of a bunt to put a pair of 'Bows in scoring position, then
Eric Ramirez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But a
Chayce Ka'aua strike out followed by a
Jonathan Weeks ground out ended the rally and gave the Ducks the win.
Torres-Costa worked six complete innings but did not factor in the decision. He was impressive nonetheless, striking out his career-high eight batters before leaving the game with a one-run lead.
Andrew Jones (0-1) was tagged with the loss in one and two-thirds innings of relief work.
Trailing by a run, UH (0-2) put two across the plate on a pair of RBI hits from
Jordan Richartz and Ka'aua to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The lead stood for three innings when Nick Catalano (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) took Jones deep over the left field wall for a two-run homer and put OU up 3-2.
Reliever Stephen Nogosek earned the win for the Ducks (2-0) in two scoreless innings of work.
The 'Bows and Ducks play game three of their series on Sunday. First pitch at Les Murakami Stadium is set for 1:05 p.m.
