STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team concluded the Stanford Invitational in fifth-place, Sunday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. After dropping their first match to No. 4 California, the Rainbow Wahine came back to upset No. 7 San Jose State, 12-10 in overtime.

In the morning, UH fell to the Golden Bears 8-5. After trailing to the Golden Bears 2-0 in the first, the Rainbow Wahine were unable to catch up despite putting points on the board in the quarters to follow. Claire Nixon, Caity Lopes da Silva, Emily Carr, Taylor Molde and Chloe Barr tallied one goal apiece towards UH's five points.

The Rainbow Wahine came through in the afternoon to top off their six-match road trip with a victory. Chloe Barr recorded a hat trick against the Spartans, scoring three of UH's 12 goals with Chillida Esforzado and Nixon adding two each.

After trailing 6-4 at halftime behind San Jose State, UH came from behind to tie the score midway through the third quarter, 7-7 following back-to-back goals by Carr and Paula Chillida Esforzado. The Rainbow Wahine took their first lead of the match, 8-7 with Claire Nixon taking advantage of a Spartan exclusion, but SJSU quickly answered back to tie 8-8 to end the third.

The Spartans scored two goals in a row halfway through the fourth, taking a 10-8 lead over UH. However, with the final minutes winding down, Nixon's second goal of the game cut their lead down 10-9. With just 53-seconds left on the clock, sophomore Barr tied it 10-10 to take the match into overtime. In the fifth period, Barr scored her third goal of the match off a 6-on-5 play to give UH the lead. In the end, senior Caity Lopes da Silva scored one at the buzzer to top off the win, 12-10.

The Rainbow Wahine return to action Feb. 19 as they hit the road for the second time to take on Claremont.
