Aaron Valdes had 31 points and 14 rebounds,
Roderick Bobbitt added 21 points and 15 assists, and the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team rallied from a 23-point deficit for a 101-96 overtime exhibition win over Chaminade on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Brocke Stepteau ignited the 'Bows off the bench, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half and overtime.
Quincy Smith added 15 points and six assists and
Stefan Jankovic contributed 12 points before fouling out late in the second half.
Sam Daly led the Silverswords with 18 points off the bench and Kuany Kuany equaled Valdes with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Valdes had the 'Bows going early with nine points including two baseline dunks. Despite leading all scorers, he would go scoreless the rest of the first half as Chaminade used a 19-0 run to take a 40-18 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kuany and Kiran Shastri helped the Swords to the big lead.
UH would cut into the lead before halftime though, going on an 11-1 run to close the period and shave the lead to 11 points. Bobbitt forced the issue, driving and getting to the line where he was 16-21 for the game.
The 'Bows picked up where they left off as
Quincy Smith opened the second half with a three-pointer and added another bucket to close the gap to 43-41. The Swords were relentless though, refusing to give up the lead until Stepteau's three-pointer put UH up 81-79 with 1:14 remaining. The 'Bows couldn't shake Chaminade though and it would be Daly's driving up and under layup that would send the game into overtime.
UH had all the answers in the extra frame, leading by as much as eight points midway through before making the rally complete with the five-point win.
The 'Bows play their season opener next weekend when they host the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. They open with Montana State on Friday, Nov.13 at 7:00 p.m.
