Gener)HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i did themselves no favors against Fresno State, turning the ball over four times while committing costly penalties in a 42-14 home loss to Fresno State, Saturday night at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors dropped their eighth consecutive game to fall to 2-9 overall and 0-7 in Mountain West play heading into next week's league finale against San Jose State.
UH more than doubled their average for penalty yards per game, committing 11 penalties for 132 yards, including seven personal foul penalties and three in Fresno State's first scoring drive. One of those penalties was assessed to defensive back
Nick Nelson that led to his ejection for targeting.
The Bulldogs (3-7, 2-5 MW) capitalized on UH's mistakes on the way to their fifth straight victory in the series. They never trailed in the game and at one point scored 28 consecutive points to cement the victory. Bulldogs quarterback Zack Greenlee had himself a game, going 20-of-35 for 285 yards and six touchdowns including two to wide receiver Da'mari Scott.
UH never found any traction offensively, even making a quarterback switch in the second half in hopes of resuscitating a stagnant offense. Starting quarterback Ikaika Woosley finished 8-of-20 for 92 yards with a touchdown and interception, while backup
Max Wittek came in going 9-of-19 for 116 yards and two interceptions.
'Bows running back
Paul Harris did manage to string together his fourth 100-yard game of the season, rushing for 126 yards on a career-high 26 attempts and wide receiver
Makoa Camanse-Stevens finished with a career-high six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Usual stalwarts on defense linebacker
Julian Gener had 17 total tackles, one-and-a-half sacks, and five tackles-for-loss. which tied the UH single-season record in the stat. Mountain West leader in tackles-for-loss
Kennedy Tulimasealii had consistent pressure all night and increased his lead with another two behind scrimmage, bringing his season total to 15.5.
Despite Fresno State's 28-7 lead going into halftime, it was anything but an awe-inspiring performance by either team. It was a non-rhythmical and disjointed first half of play which saw UH rack up 117 yards in penalties, 90 coming in personal foul penalties, and six of those penalties against Fresno State's quarterback.
As the mistakes mounted for UH, so did their deficit as Greenlee had a career game in the first half alone, throwing four touchdown passes to three different receivers.
The Rainbow Warriors will look to bounce back against San Jose State, the second in their season-ending three-game homestand, Saturday, Nov. 21. Kick-off is 6:00 p.m.
