Box Score (html)HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team closed its opening weekend of Big West Conference play with a 7-2 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The 'Bows fall to 3-9-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Tiana Fujimoto and
Keala Parker-Lee both netted goals for UH but it was overshawdowed by the seven times Cal Poly hit the back of the net. The Mustangs seven goals were the most ever given up by Hawai'i at home.
The 'Bows showed life early in the match when both
Lidia Battaglia and
Storm Kenui both had quality chances on goal. Battaglia received a ball in an advanced position just outside the box but her shot sailed over the crossbar. Kenui's bid was even closer, as her set piece from distance rebounded off the crossbar back into play but was cleared by the Cal Poly defense.
Cal Poly however would take advantage of their early opportunities. Caitlyn Kreutz scored her first of two goals when she scored following a misommunication in the back between Battaglia and goalkeeper
Monk Berger. Elise Krieghoff volleyed home Cal Poly's second goal off a service from Miki Foster and the Mustangs added their third just minutes before halftime on a McKenzie Flood stike eight yards out.
Fujimoto's goal came less than 30 seconds into the second half but was answered three minutes later as Cal Poly kept up the pressure for the big win.
The 'Bows now travel to the mainland for their first conference road matches. UH faces UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT) and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 5:00 p.m. PT (2:00 p.m. HT).
