ResultsLOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's swimming and diving team fell to No. 11 USC, 108.5-217 on Saturday afternoon after wrapping up the second day of the dual meet against the Trojans at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The women's team also fell to both USC and North Carolina State.
Despite the loss, the Rainbow Warriors held their own against the nationally ranked men of Troy, pulling off two first place finishes is individual events.
All-American senior diver Amund Gismervisk won the 1-meter event (376.40) followed by a second place debut by
Johan Sandell (351.20). Freshman
Carlos Loera additionally made his collegiate debut taking fourth with a score of 192.05 on the 1-meter. On the 3-meter event, Gismervik took third (315.95) followed by Sandell (300.80) in fourth, and Loera (182.10) in fifth.
Freshman
Micah Ornellas also led the Warriors with a standout debut, taking first in the 100 fly (48.91) and third in the 100 back (50.88). Meanwhile, senior captain
Kacy Johnson earned second in the 200 fly (1:51.65) and 200 IM (1:55.16), and third in the 500 free (4:31.49) and 200 free (1:40.44).
In the 100 free and 200 free,
Yuri Samouilich finished in second place with times of 45.69 and 1:40.14, respectively. Additionally,
Ryan Makuta led the 'Bows in the 50 free with a third place finish (21.45) and newcomer
Jonas Gutzat took second in the 1000 free (9:30.46).
The Rainbow Wahine also finished the two-day event holding their own against two different nationally ranked squads.
Senior divers
Aimee Harrison and
Lauren Hall highlighted both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events as expected. Harrison won the 1-meter with a score of 287.90, while Hall followed in third (262.05). In the 3-meter event, Harrison and Hall earned a 2-3 finish with scores of 294.85 and 289.60, respectively.
The Wahine swimmers were led by
Erin McNulty, who landed fourth in the 100 fly (56.13) and sixth in the 200 fly (2:07.76). True freshman
Jane Ip also made a standout debut, making fifth in the 200 breast (2:23.02) and seventh in the 100 breast (1:05.90).
Additionally for the Rainbow Wahine,
Cherelle Oestringer finished fourth in the 1000 free (10:13.99),
Taylor Thorsen took sixth in the 100 free (52.61), and
Tahna Lindquist took fifth in the 200 back (2:02.80).
The 'Bows return to action Oct. 30-31 for their home-opener as they take on the U.S. Air Force Academy at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
