Meet ResultsSUNNYVALE, Calif. — University of Hawai'i women's cross country sophomore
Montana Martinez continued her hot streak and made a historic personal best to lead the Rainbow Wahine, who finished 13th on Saturday at Baylands Regional Park in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
"We're super happy with the performance of the team today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "This is the type of meet we needed headed to a fast course for the Big West Championships, with season-best 6k's for all and really nice breakthrough races for Montana and Sabrina—a real team effort in excelling today. We'll now set our sights on continued improvement and optimum health for the championship phase of the cross country campaign."
Finishing 40th overall in a tough 172-runner, 20-team field, the defending Big West Athlete of the Week Martinez ran a personal record 6k time of 21:26.7. Her finish was the best time by a Rainbow Wahine runner since the 2007 season and second-fastest time since 2001, dropping 48.13 seconds off her career best in Saturday's race.
However, Martinez was hardly alone in making it a season-high day just before the conference meet, as all eight runners set personal records on the day. Leading the second wave, freshman
Sabrina Sterbis chopped 1:05 off her career best to finish 78th in a time of 21:57.1. Freshman
Camille Campos and junior
Alli Cross went bang-bang at 82nd and 83rd, separated by a mere 0.3 seconds, with Campos finishing at 22:00.6 in a 14.26-second improvement and Cross finishing at 22:00.9 in a 35.82-second improvement. Rounding out the Rainbow Wahine scorers, junior
Caitlyn Foss improved by 27.5 seconds for a 118th-place finish in 22:24.9.
Also performing well for the Rainbow Wahine, freshman
Piper McDonald improved her PR by 3.5 seconds, coming in 124th in 22:29.9, while freshman
Haley Beaumont improved 23.48 seconds for 143rd (22:53.1) and freshman
Tristan Setzer dropped her time by 29.68 seconds for 165th (23:38.9).
Running in the meet for the 10th consecutive season, the Rainbow Wahine finished 13th as a unit with a total score of 307 in the 18th-scoring-team 6k race. Winning the individual title was Sacramento State senior Chloe Berlioux in a time of 19:54.6. Meanwhile, Loyola Marymount took the team title with a score of 58. UH was flanked by St. Mary's (CA) in 12th with 268 points and UTSA in 14th at 343 points.
Wrapping their final regular season meet on the mainland with a high, the Rainbow Wahine now turn their focus to the conference race, looking to improve on last season's ninth-place finish at the Big West Championships, set for Oct. 31 in Riverside, Calif. at the 6k UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course.
